Lenten Book Study:
Interrupting Silence
by Walter Brueggemann
This Lenten season, GPC is invited to read Walter Brueggemann’s Interrupting Silence: God’s Command to Speak Out and to gather in small groups for prayerful reflection and conversation. This short, eight-chapter book offers a prophetic call for people of faith to break silence in the face of injustice and suffering, and to reclaim truthful, faithful speech as a core practice of discipleship.
Books are available for approximately $10 through most online retailers and the PC(USA) Store or though the link above. Copies may also be ordered through the church office by contacting Penny Messinger or Pastor Caleb (717-334-1235) or by emailing Caleb. Books will be ordered throughout Lent; however, to receive a copy before Lent begins, please place your order by Sunday, February 15.
Small groups will meet throughout Lent, with flexibility in size and format, and will be supported by sermon themes and study guides prepared by Pastors Caleb and Drew. Groups may meet at the church, in homes, over coffee, or with just a few participants. Those interested in facilitating a small group are invited to an introductory meeting on Tuesday, February 3, at 7:00 pm, where materials and guidance will be provided.
To begin the season together, Pastors Caleb and Drew will co-facilitate an all-church kickoff class on Tuesday, February 10, at 2:00 pm and 7:00 pm, introducing the book and key themes for Lent. Small groups will conclude the week of March 26, with a final wrap-up gathering on Holy Tuesday, March 31.
Questions may be directed to Pastor Caleb at caleb@gettysburgpresbyterian.org or 717-334-1235.
